We, your Board members, would like to consult all owners of Somerset Gardens with regards to making our condo a smoke-free building.
A smoke-free building is one where smoking is prohibited in all parts of the building, including each living unit.
At the outset, we want to be very clear that our aim is not to denigrate smokers, but to be proactive in reducing the harmful effects of second-hand smoke on all residents.
If such a no-smoking policy was adopted, all present owners or their renters who smoke would be grandfathered in this policy. They would not be forced to quit or be evicted. The policy would not prohibit people who smoke from buying or renting a unit. If they decided to buy or rent a unit, they would do so knowing that our building is a smoke-free environment where smoking is not allowed.
In the long run, we believe that our condo would be a more desirable building for all and would likely increase in property value.
To that effect, we are seeking your input to guide us in our next steps.
